한국 성소수자들의 넷플릭스 퀴어 콘텐츠 수용에 관한 탐색적 연구

An Exploratory Study of Korean LGBTQ+ People’s Reception of Queer Content on Netflix

While LGBTQ+ people have historically faced exclusion from the Korean media landscape, the entry of Netflix into South Korea has marked a significant distribution of queer content. Drawing on focus group interviews with 37 LGBTQ+ South Koreans who have been Netflix users for over a year, this study delves into how they perceive Netflix’s queer representations within the Korean sociocultural context. The findings reveal that LGBTQ+ individuals experience personal empathy and enhanced social visibility through Netflix’s portrayal of queer characters and narratives. However, the absence of intersectional diversity and the dominance of an Anglo-American context contribute to a sense of distance and alienation for them. The expressed desire for increased representation of queer individuals from diverse backgrounds in Korea reflects a broader aspiration for the integration of queer identities into Korean media and society. Through an examination of the implications of Netflix’s distribution of queer content, this study sheds light on LGBTQ+ people in Korea as active consumers of media content, bringing attention to their articulated needs and desires.

한국의 미디어 환경에서 성소수자가 콘텐츠의 재현 대상이나 수용 주체로서 배제되어 온 가운데, 넷플릭스는 한국 시장에 퀴어 콘텐츠가 유통되는 통로를 열었다. 이 연구는 넷플릭스를 1년 이상 이용한 경험이 있는 한국 성소수자 37명과의 포커스 그룹 인터뷰를 기반으로 당사자들이 한국의 사회문화적 맥락에서 넷플릭스의 퀴어 재현을 어떻게 수용하는지 탐구했다. 성소수자들은 넷플릭스가 재현하는 퀴어 인물과 서사를 통해 개인적 공감과 사회적 가시화를 경험했다. 그러나 교차적 다양성의 부족과 영미권 중심의 이야기 배경은 당사자들에게 소외감을 불러일으키며 온전한 공감과 가시화를 이끄는 데 제약으로 작용했다. 한국을 비롯해 더욱 다양한 배경의 퀴어 콘텐츠를 원하는 성소수자들의 바람은 한국의 미디어와 사회에서도 성소수자가 자연스럽게 존재하며 어우러지기를 바라는 현실적인 소망을 반영하는 것으로 보인다. 이 연구는 글로벌 OTT가 수용자에게 매개하는 문화적 경험을 성소수자 당사자들의 관점에서 살펴보면서, 소외되어 온 한국의 성소수자들을 미디어 콘텐츠의 수용 주체로 조명하고 이들의 수요를 가시화했다는 의의를 지닌다.
