The study analyzed the components of modal auxiliary verbs with verbal characteristics in 15 Sino-Tibetan languages in China. It can be summarized as follows: First, this study examined what modality meanings are presented in their components with verbal characteristics, and ‘ability’ and ‘possibility’ modalities and ‘intention,’ ‘willingness,’ and ‘wish’ modalities were induced. This shows that the fact that the auxiliary verbs have verbal characteristics is quite closely related to the modality meanings. Second, it looked into the verbal characteristics presented by modal auxiliary verbs that were extracted in this paper, and the degree of grammaticalization could be estimated by verbal characteristics such as change of form. In addition, it was possible to infer the path of grammaticalization as a type of object accompanied by the modality components. Third, the linguistic typology characteristics of modality and its path of grammaticalization were examined, and how they relate to the analysis in this paper was studied. Moreover, it was found that the result generally corresponds to the cross-linguistic phenomenon. Fourth, it established a typological database of modalities of minority languages in China and identified and presented typologically noteworthy cases.
본 논문은 중국지역 중국-티베트어족 언어 15개를 대상으로 양태를 나타내는 조동사이면서, 동사적 특성을 나타내는 성분을 추출하여 분석을 진행하였다. 본 연구의 대체적인 내용은 다음과 같다. 첫째, 동사적 특성을 가진 양태 성분들이 어떠한 양태 의미를 나타내는지 살펴보았는데, ‘능력(ability), 가능성(possibility)’ 양태와 ‘의도(intention), 의지(willingness), 바람(wish)’ 양태로 귀납되는 것을 확인할 수 있었다. 이는 조동사가 동사적 특성을 가지는 것이 양태 의미와 상당히 밀접한 관련이 있다는 것을 의미한다. 둘째, 본고에서 발췌한 양태조동사들이 통사적으로 어떤 특성을 나타내는지 살펴보았는데, 형태 변화 여부 등의 통사적 특성으로 문법화의 정도를 가늠할 수 있었으며. 또한 양태 성분이 수반하는 목적어의 유형으로 문법화의 경로를 유추해 볼 수 있었다. 셋째, 양태(modality)의 언어 유형론적 특성 및 그 문법화의 경로에 대해 알아보고, 이를 본고에서 분석한 내용과 견주어 어떠한 관련성이 있는지 살펴보았는데, 대체로 범언어적인 현상에 부합됨을 알 수 있었다. 넷째, 중국지역 소수민족 언어의 양태 유형별 데이터베이스를 구축하였으며, 유형론적으로 주목해서 볼만한 사례를 발굴하여 제시하였다.
