This paper explores the application of Zhuangzi’s aesthetic concepts within modern digital environments such as the metaverse. The metaverse, enabled by virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR), offers users an immersive experience beyond physical reality, facilitating new forms of social interaction and ways of existing. This study examines how Zhuangzi’s thoughts on harmony with nature, effortless action (wu wei), imagination, and the blurring of the boundaries between reality and dreams can be reinterpreted in the metaverse context. Zhuangzi’s concept of “effortless action” aligns closely with how users navigate and discover themselves in the metaverse without artificial constraints, reflecting his ideals of natural existence. The freedom from physical constraints in the metaverse allows users to explore and experience in ways that resonate with Zhuangzi’s flow of natural being. His emphasis on imagination plays a crucial role in the metaverse, enabling users to create and immerse in new digital worlds, thereby experiencing the surreal beyond physical reality. Moreover, the paper discusses the relativity of self in the metaverse, connecting it with Zhuangzi’s ideas. The metaverse allows users to experiment with and express multiple identities, akin to Zhuangzi’s views on the fluid and ever-changing self. Users can represent themselves through avatars in diverse ways, forming new types of social relations that are hard to achieve in physical reality, thus reinterpreting Zhuangzi’s concept of a fluid self for the digital age. The study posits that Zhuangzi’s aesthetic perspective provides a crucial theoretical framework for understanding user experiences within the metaverse, analyzing how the metaverse reshapes human existence and experience in contemporary society. This philosophical approach offers insights into the essence of human experiences and existence in the era of the metaverse, contributing to a deeper understanding of the interactions between humans and technology in the digital age. Particularly, immersive and surreal experiences within the metaverse echo Zhuangzi’s philosophical reflections, allowing users to explore new forms of existence by dismantling the boundaries between reality and dreams. The paper underscores the significant contribution of integrating Zhuangzi’s aesthetics with the metaverse to expanding aesthetic thought in the digital age, laying a foundation for philosophical discussions in future metaverse environments.
