This paper examines the utilization of Chinese Maritime Customs data, based on modern China"s Customs trade reports and statistics, focusing on socioeconomic historical research and critically reflecting on new methodologies in the digital transformation era while exploring future challenges. First, it examines the composition and characteristics of Customs data and the current status of digital database and archive construction, highlighting its academic value. Additionally, it analyzes research trends and cases in modern Chinese socioeconomic history utilizing Customs data. Through this analysis, the paper demonstrates the significance of Customs data in modern Chinese socioeconomic historical research and its various potential applications. The paper then discusses the transformation of historical research methods with the advancement of digital technology, while also presenting the limitations of digital historical research methodology. It particularly points out difficulties in inferring causality, the potential oversight of specific historical contexts, and the risk of omitting key variables from certain periods. While acknowledging these challenges, the paper emphasizes the continued importance of understanding the characteristics of Customs data. The study focuses on the scope and domain of the data, the understanding of concepts like "imports" and "exports", changes in statistical coverage due to territorial variations, data accuracy, and potential expansions in utilization. This paper aims to contribute to methodological discussions in modern Chinese socioeconomic historical research by suggesting ways to develop historical research using Customs data that complement existing research methods in the digital age.
본 논문은 근대 중국의 해관 무역보고 및 통계를 기반으로 하는 해관 데 이터의 활용과 사회경제사 연구를 중심으로, 디지털 전환 시대에서의 새로 운 방법론에 대한 비판적 성찰과 향후 과제를 고찰한다. 우선 해관 데이터 의 학술적 가치에 주목하여 그 구성과 성격, 디지털 데이터베이스 및 아카 이브 구축 현황을 살펴본다. 또한 해관 데이터를 활용한 근대 중국 사회경 제사 연구 경향 및 사례를 분석한다. 이를 통해 해관 데이터가 근대 중국의 사회경제사 연구에서 차지하는 중요성과 다양한 활용 가능성을 보여준다. 다음으로 디지털 기술 발전에 따른 역사 연구 방법의 변화를 논하며, 동 시에 디지털 역사학 연구방법론의 한계점을 제시한다. 특히 인과관계 추론 의 어려움, 특수한 역사적 맥락의 간과 가능성, 특정 시기 주요 변수 누락 위험 등을 지적한다. 그러나 한편으로 해관 데이터의 특성을 이해하는 것이 여전히 중요함을 강조하며 해관 데이터의 특성과 향후 과제를 다룬다. 데이 터의 대상 및 영역, "進口"와 "出口" 개념의 이해, 영토 변동에 따른 통계 범 위 변화, 데이터의 정확성, 그리고 활용의 확장성 등을 중심으로 고찰한다. 본 논문은 디지털 시대에 해관 데이터를 활용한 역사 연구가 기존의 연구 방법과 상호 보완적으로 발전할 수 있는 방향을 제시함으로써, 근대 중국 사회경제사 연구의 방법론적 논의에 일조하고자 한다.
