새로운 박물관 정의에 따른 한국 지역 박물관·미술관 학예연구사 인식 연구

A Research into the Perception of Curators in Regional Museums and Art Museums in Korea towards the New Paradigm of Museum

The newly redefined role of museums in 2022, emphasizing inclusivity, diversity, and sustainability, has raised expectations for museums to play more active roles within their communities. While there is a growing body of research on the roles of regional museums and art galleries in Korea, the concurrent issue of rural depopulation presents a unique challenge. This paper aims to explore how these institutions can meet the heightened expectations associated with their evolving roles. Given that curators are the driving force behind implementing and executing new museum policies, this study surveyed 12 curators from four regional public museums and art galleries in Korea. The survey results highlight the critical need for strategic leadership in all institutions, with museum directors being identified as the most crucial figure in this regard. The presence of strategic leadership was deemed essential for individual curators to effectively carry out their duties. Additionally, curators emphasized the need for personal capacity-building through education and training to align with the new museum paradigm.

2022년 새롭게 정의된 박물관은 기존 박물관에서 요구되지 않았던 포용성, 다양성, 지속가능성을 중심으로 지역민, 지역사회에 대한 다채로운 역할을 기대하게 만든다. 한국의 경우도 지역 박물관·미술관의 역할에 대한 다양한 연구가 이루어지고 있다. 지역 인구 소멸 역시 동시대적 현상으로 대두되었다. 이런 시점에서 본고는 박물관·미술관의 역할 변화와 이에 대한 높은 기대치를 어떻게 충족시킬 수 있을까에 관한 연구의 시발점이다. 무엇보다도 박물관의 정의를 이해하고 정책을 수립하여 계획을 이행하고 실천하는 원동력은 학예연구사이다. 따라서 본 연구에서는 4개의 국내 지역 공립박물관·미술관의 학예연구사 12인을 대상으로 실제 새로운 박물관 정의에서 내세운 다양성, 포용성, 지속가능성 등이 각 기관에서 실천되고 있는지, 또는 실천하기 위해서는 어떤 점을 필요로 하는지, 무엇이 문제인지 등을 살펴보기 위한 그들의 인식 조사를 실시하여 그 결과를 간략하게 살펴보았다. 조사 결과 모든 기관에서는 전략적 리더십이 절대적으로 필요하나 가장 부재한 점으로 손꼽혔으며 대표적으로 기관의 관장이 이에 대한 책임자로 언급되었다. 이러한 전략적 리더십의 존재는 결국 개인 학예연구사가 업무를 이행하는데 필요한 부분이라고도 언급되었다. 다음으로 박물관 학예연구사들은 새로운 정의에 발맞추는 박물관이 되기 위해 자신들에게 필요한 것으로 개인의 역량 강화를 위한 교육을 언급하고 있다.
