This study aims to identify the factors that drive transgender individuals into prostitution, explore the meanings of their experiences, and analyze their interactions with social safety while engaged in this occupation. For this purpose, the experiences of six transgender individuals engaged in prostitution were examined. The findings revealed that transgender sex worker often became estranged from their families due to their non-normative gender identities and have turned to prostitution for survival after facing precarious employment situations. Despite prostitution initially appearing to offer a sense of freedom, this freedom turned out to be paradoxical, unstable and exploitative. Moreover, the sexual intercourse during prostitution often conflicted with their gender identity, reinforcing their assigned gender. They had to perform and sell ‘normalcy,’ which exacerbated feelings of dysphoria. Despite the challenges, prostitution was ‘labor’ for these transgenders, and they hoped for social protection as ‘workers.’ However, public spaces where they could seek help were practically inaccessible or failed to address the unique challenges faced by transgender individuals. Instead, these spaces often demanded proof of their hardships, resulting in structural exclusion. This study explored the prostitution experiences of transgender individuals, highlighting their vulnerabilities in public spaces and ‘being fictional’ of social and institutional protections. It calls for a richer public discourse on transgender lives and suggest a shift toward advocacy social services and policies that transcend gender binaries and heteronormative frameworks.
본 연구는 성매매 종사 경험이 있는 트랜스젠더를 중심으로 무엇이 트랜스젠더를 성매매로 이끌었는지 확인하고 그 경험의 의미를 드러내며, 성매매 진입과 경험에서 사회적 보호와의 상호작용이 어떠했는지 분석하는 것을 목표로 한다. 이를 위해 성매매 경험이 있는 6명의 트랜스젠더의 경험을 분석하였다. 트랜스젠더 성매매 종사자는 ‘정상적’이지 않은 성별을 갖고 있다는 이유로 가정에서 단절되었고 불안정 노동에 종사하다 생존을 위해 성매매에 진입하게 되었다. 성매매는 자유를 보장해주는 일처럼 보였으나 실상 그 자유는 모순된 자유였다. 성매매 또한 불안정하고 착취적인 일이었기 때문이다. 성매매에 수반되는 성관계는 자신의 정체성이 부정당하는 경험이며 지정 성별이 각인되는 일이기도 했다. 그 과정에서 ‘정상’인 것처럼 자신을 연기하고 ‘정상성’을 판매하며 디스포리아를 느끼고 있었다. 이러한 어려움이 있음에도 성매매는 트랜스젠더 당사자에게 ‘노동’이었고, ‘노동자’로서의 보호를 기대했다. 그러나 공적 공간에서 도움을 요청할 수 있는 곳들은 실질적으로 접근이 어렵거나 트랜스젠더이기에 경험한 어려움을 포용하지 못했고, 오히려 그 어려움의 증명을 요구했으며, 결국 구조적으로 배제되었다. 본 연구는 트랜스젠더의 성매매 경험을 탐색했고 그 경험을 통해 공적 공간에서의 취약성과 사회적⋅제도적 보호의 허구성을 제시했으며, 트랜스젠더 삶에 대한 풍부한 공적 논의와 성별 이분법과 이성애 중심적인 제도에서 권리 옹호적인 사회서비스 및 정책으로의 전환을 제기한다.
