Russia"s logistics operators have a vital importance in maintaining domestic and international trade as the country is the largest in the world by area. Despite the critical importance of understanding development of logistics companies, existing literature on the subject is relatively limited. Therefore, this research fills a significant gap in the academic literature by directing its attention toward this area. The present research aims to analyze the degree of market concentration and monopoly patterns of the 20 leading Russian logistics companies based on data from 2013 to 2022. For this purpose, concentration ratio (CR), the Herfindahl–Hirschman index (HHI), the Gini coefficient, Lorenz curve, and shift-share analysis (SSA) were adopted. The following results were obtained: The concentration of the three largest companies in terms of performance, measured by CR(3), showed a slight decrease as the index went from 0.848 in 2013 to 0.718 in 2022. The HHI values decreased from 5,867 in 2013 to 3,891 in 2022, indicating a shift towards a less concentrated logistics market in terms of operating companies. According to the Gini coefficients and Lorenz curve analysis, the market demonstrated a shift towards greater equality, with the Gini index decreasing from 0.831 in 2013 to 0.697 in 2022. In addition, the SSA revealed that the logistics market in Russia is dominated by four key players, notably led by RZD with the highest absolute growth rate (ABSGR) value. Following this were TransContainer, FESCO, and Freight One. Overall, the study results indicated a trend towards deconcentration within the Russian logistics market.
