2017년 한국에서 발생한 생리대 파동은 단순한 제품 안전성의 문제가 아니라, 월경하는 몸이란 무엇인지 사유하고 그 정치성을 타진할 수 있게 하는 사건으로 재해석될수 있다. 기존 연구들은 이 사건을 여성 권리 담론, 위험 사회 프레임, 혹은 시장 반응중심의 경제적 접근 등으로 분석해왔지만, 대부분 몸과 기술을 분리 가능한 존재로 전제하며 그 구성적 얽힘을 충분히 조명하지 못했다. 본 연구는 도나 해러웨이의 사이보그 개념과 스테이시 앨러이모의 횡단신체성, 노출 개념을 바탕으로, 월경하는 몸을 이미 기술물질인 몸으로, 생리대를 이미 몸과 얽힌 기술물질로 사유한다. ‘기능’에서 ‘성분’으로의 담론 전환은 생리대를 감지 가능한 물질로 가시화시켰고, 릴리안이 우수한 기술에서 의심의 대상으로 전환된 과정, SAP(고분자흡수체)의 가시화와 ‘No SAP’ 담론의 등장은 경험되지만 여전히 충분히 이해되거나 해석되지 못한 월경하는 몸의 횡단신체적 성격과 노출의 조건을 드러낸다. 유해물질이라는 위험 노출의 상황에서, 안전을 둘러싼 정부의 과학정치적 안일함과 달리, 과학이 전제하는 세계 구성방식 자체에 대한 재구성을 요청하는 긴장이 명확히 드러났다는 점에서, 이 사건은 여전히 현재적인 문제 공간으로 남아 있다.
The 2017 sanitary pad controversy in South Korea was not merely a matter of product safety. It invites a deeper examination of the menstruating body and its political significance. Previous studies have often analyzed the incident through the lenses of women’s rights, risk society, or market-based perspectives, assuming a clear separation between body and technology. This article challenges that perspective by drawing on Donna Haraway’s cyborg theory and Stacy Alaimo’s concepts of trans-corporeality and exposure to conceptualize the menstruating body as technologized, with the sanitary pad as a techno-material entity already entangled with the body. The discursive shift from “functionality” to “chemical composition” rendered sanitary pads more perceptible as material objects. Lilian, once praised for technological excellence, became an object of suspicion. The visibility of superabsorbent polymer (SAP) and the rise of “No SAP” rhetoric revealed the trans-corporeal and exposed nature of the menstruating body, a condition experienced but not yet fully theorized. In this context of chemical exposure, the disjuncture between the government’s technoscientific complacency and users’ embodied unease signals the need to reconfigure the epistemological foundations of institutional science. This article contends that the menstruating body should not be reduced to reproductive femininity or consumer subjectivity but approached as a trans-corporeal cyborg, a technologized body that navigates and interprets the material exposure.
