The Effects of Mindfulness-Based Interventions on Cognitive Function

Mindfulness-based interventions are increasingly applied in clinical settings, due to their positive effects on stress management, emotional regulation, and social functioning. Additionally, mindfulness has been reported to enhance cognitive functions. Previous neuroimaging studies link mindfulness training to structural and functional changes in key brain regions, particularly the anterior cingulate cortex, associated with attention, and the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex, involved in higher-order cognitive functions. Recent studies suggest that different mindfulness techniques may induce distinct cognitive effects. Focused attention meditation enhances sustained attention by directing focus to a specific object, while open monitoring meditation promotes nonjudgmental awareness of all emerging experiences. These variations may lead to differential cognitive enhancements and neural adaptations. This review aims to: 1) synthesize research on the cognitive effects of mindfulness-based interventions, identifying specific areas of improvement; 2) explore differences in cognitive enhancement based on mindfulness techniques; and 3) examine the effectiveness of mindfulness programs delivered through applications and online platforms, summarizing studies on digital mindfulness interventions for cognitive improvement.
