훈민정음 해례본을 활용한 키네틱 라이팅 아트 공간 디자인 연구

A Study on the Kinetic Lighting Art Space Design Utilizing the Hunminjeongeum Manuscript

(Background and Purpose) In recent years, media art exhibitions have expanded rapidly across diverse themes and technological platforms. However, cases focusing on national treasures remain relatively limited. In particular, cultural artifacts such as the Hunminjeongeum Manuscript (Annotated Edition of the Korean Script) are subject to strict legal and physical restrictions, as their overseas export is fundamentally prohibited by law. This poses significant challenges to exhibiting such items in physical form. To overcome these constraints and promote the cultural significance of national treasures globally, this design research aims to analyze the formative principles embedded in the 28 letters of the Hunminjeongeum Manuscript utilizing intellectual property (IP), and proposes an immersive and interactive spatial design incorporating kinetic lighting art. (Method) This study focuses on the immersive media art exhibition titled “As the Clouds Clear, the Moon Shines, and as the Wind Blows, the Stars Illuminate,” held at the Dongdaemun Design Plaza (DDP) from August 15, 2024 to April 30, 2025, utilizing the IP of the Kansong Art and Culture Foundation. The study analyzes the structural principles of the 28 Korean letters and establishes a theoretical framework based on previous research and literature related to kinetic lighting art. Domestic and international case studies of spatial design employing kinetic art were reviewed to derive a design direction that reinterprets the form and philosophy of the Korean script as a visual language. A spatial design reflecting these findings was developed, with a focus on practical applicability in exhibition contexts. (Results) The proposed immersive spatial design is based on the structural and philosophical foundations of the 28 characters in the Hunminjeongeum Manuscript. The exhibition utilizes light-emitting diode (LED) lighting boxes, kinetic mechanisms, and mirrored surfaces to create a sensory environment that allows visitors to intuitively experience the visual language of the script. The letters are categorized into four types—pictographic, basic, extended-stroke, and variant forms—and are visualized through lighting boxes made from acrylic Hanji, a material that combines traditional Korean paper texture and modern durability. The lighting is based on Obangsaek, Korea’s five-directional color system, and changes gradually over time. Spatial circulation is designed to enhance emotional immersion and visual order. (Conclusions) This design research reinterprets the symbolic meaning and structure of Korea’s traditional writing system through contemporary media art. By leveraging the IP of the Kansong Art and Culture Foundation, the study suggests a convergence of tradition and technology. It ultimately demonstrates how Korea’s unique script-based cultural identity can be transformed into a modern artistic language and presents practical implications for future cultural content and media exhibitions.

(연구배경 및 목적) 최근 미디어 아트 전시는 다양한 주제와 기술을 기반으로 확산되고 있으나, 국보를 주제로 한 사례는 여전히 제한적이다. 특히 훈민정음 해례본과 같은 국보는 해외 반출이 원칙적으로 금지되어 있어, 실물 전시에는 법적·물리적 제약이 따른다. 이러한 제약을 극복하고 국보의 가치를 세계적으로 소개하고 활용하기 위해, 본 디자인 연구는 지식재산권(IP)을 활용한 훈민정음 28자 자모의 조형적 원리를 분석하고, 이를 키네틱 라이팅 아트와 결합한 몰입형 인터랙티브 공간 디자인을 제안하는 것을 목적으로 한다. (연구방법) 본 연구는 동대문디자인플라자(DDP)에서 2024년 8월 15일부터 2025년 4월 30일까지간송미술문화재단의 지식재산권(IP)을 기반으로 한 몰입형 미디어 아트 전시 "구름이 걷히니 달이 비치고 바람 부니 별이 빛난다"를 대상으로 하였다. 훈민정음 28자 자모의 조형 원리를 분석하고, 키네틱 라이팅 아트의 개념 및 구성 요소에 대한 기존 연구와 자료 분석을 바탕으로 이론적 틀을 마련하였다. 이를 바탕으로 키네틱 아트를 활용한 국내외 공간 디자인 사례를 수집·분석하고, 자모의 조형성과 철학을 시각 언어로 재해석할 수 있는 디자인 방향을 도출하였다. 최종적으로 분석 내용을 반영한 공간디자인을 구상하고, 전시 환경에의 적용 가능성을 제시하였다. (결과) 훈민정음 해례본 28자 자모의 조형적 원리를 기반으로, 키네틱 라이팅 아트를 활용한 몰입형 공간 디자인을 설계하였다. 전시는 LED 조명 박스, 키네틱 장치, 반사 거울을 활용해 관람자가 문자의 시각 언어를 직관적으로 체험할 수 있도록 구성되었다. 자모는 조형 원리에 따라 네 가지 범주로 분류하고, 아크릴 한지로 제작된 라이팅 박스로 구현하였다. 조명은 오방색을 기반으로 시간의 흐름에 따라 변화하며, 동선 설계를 통해 감성적 몰입과 조형적 질서를 극대화하였다. (결론) 본 디자인 연구는 전통 문자체계의 의미와 조형성을 현대적 미디어 아트로 재해석하고자 하였으며, 특히 간송미술문화재단의 지식재산권(IP)을 활용하여 전통과 기술의 융합 가능성을 제안하였다. 따라서 본 연구는전통문화의 재해석과 공간 디자인의 확장을 통해, 한국 고유의 문자 문화가 현대적 예술 언어로 재구성될 수 있음을 보여주었으며, 향후 문화 콘텐츠 및 미디어 전시 분야에서의 실용적 가능성을 제시한다.
