The cultural landscape of 19th-century England was defined by two opposing approaches to the conservation of medieval religious buildings: preservation and restoration. The Gothic Revival movement advocated for interpreted restoration, altering medieval structures to align with architects' own ideals and the prevailing design principles of the time. In contrast, the Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings (SPAB), founded by William Morris, championed preservation to maintain the authenticity of historic buildings. This paper explores 19th-century con-servation practices, focusing on treating historic buildings. It examines the SPAB manifesto and the underlying philosophy of the Arts and Crafts movement. Furthermore, the study expands the concepts of 'preservation' and 'restoration' into contemporary contexts, offering in-sights into conserving Korean cultural assets.
