Two dogs were diagnosed with portal vein thrombosis (PVT) leading to ascites. Case 1 involved a mixed-breed dog with a history of heartworm infection and pyometra presenting with ascites and exercise intolerance. Despite normal liver enzyme levels, hypoalbuminemia and abnormal bile acid concentrations were suggestive of liver dysfunction. Ultrasonography confirmed PVT, and rivaroxaban treatment was initiated, resulting in a stable condition. Case 2 was a Maltese with chronic hepatitis, showing elevated ALT, hyperbilirubinemia, hyperammonemia, and hypoalbuminemia. CT revealed PVT and a portosystemic shunt. Initial treatment with steroids and clopidogrel was discontinued because of itsside effects, and rivaroxaban was administered for thrombosis management. Supportive care, including liver supplements and dietary management, improved quality of life. These cases highlight the importance of considering PVT in dogs with transudate ascites and portal hypertension as early diagnosis, and anticoagulation therapy can aid in long-term management.
