고분자 막을 전해질로 사용하는 DMFC는 상온 상압에서 작동이 가능하며, 메탄올을 액상으로 직접 사용하르모 연료로부터 수소를 개질하는 장치가 필요 없이 전체 시스템이 간단하고, 연료의 취급이 용이하며, 환경오렴의 문제도 없으므로 미래의 초소형 이동용 전워으로서 가장 적합하다고 여겨지고 있다. 현재 촉매 활성,전극,고체 전해질, 고분자막/전극접합체(MEA)등의 분야에 걸친 개발이 활발히 진행되어 가고 있다.
