활성탄은 주로 기상 및 액상의 환경오염 방지를 위한 흡착제로써 사용되고 있으며, 고부가가치 상품이 아니므로 생산에 있어서 점차 인건비가 싼 국외에 의존하는 경향이 있고, 영세한 우리나라 업체에서는 재생탄을 가공하는 것에 주력하고 있는 설정이다. 가공방법으로 일반적으로 rotary kiln을 이용하여 공기 및 수증기를 혼입시키면서 800-900 ℃ 범위에서 4-5시간 가열함으로써 얻어진다.
