탄소섬유는 출발 원료에 따라 polyacrylonitrile(PAN)계, 피치계, 레이온계 등으로 구분할 수 있으며, 형태에 따라 장섬유와 단섬유로 구분된다[1-3]. 장섬유는 프리프레그나 필라멘트용으로 이용되기 때문에 사절이 없는 방사기술이 요구되며, 보통 응융방사나 용액방사하여 권취하는 방법에 의해 제조되고 있다. 단섬유는 각종 전극재, 복합재료용 필러, 단열재 등으로 이용된다.
