통합심리학의 사상한의 관점으로 본 아빌라의 성녀 데레사의 생애

Life of St. Teresa of Avila in the Context of all Quadrants in Integral Psychology

본 연구의 목적은 동양의 오랜 영적전통과 서양의 유산을 모아 통합이론을 정립한 켄 윌버Ken Wilber의 통합이론 중 사상 한(四象限, Four Quadrants)의 관점으로 16세기에 살았던 신비가이자 개혁가로 알려진 스페인 아빌라의 성녀 데레사의 삶을 살펴보는 것이다. 데레사의 생애에서 그 내면과 외면, 개인적이고 주관적인 것들, 그리고 집단적인 것들이 어떻게 함께 어우러져 일치와 조화를 이루어 자기초월과 통합적 인간의 모습을 나타내는지에 대한 고찰이다. 이를 통하여 다양한 차원을 소유한 다채로운 존재로서의 인간이, 그의 정신과 신체, 문화와 사회, 개인적 차원과 집합적인 것들 안에 어떻게 일치되고 초월하여, 통합적인 영의 현현 속에 통합된 삶을 이루는가를 드러내고자 하였다. 이를 위하여 우선, 윌버와 그의 통합심리학에서 중심적이고 대표이론인 AQAL에 대해 알아보고 특히 그 주요 내용인 사상한 을 자세히 파악한 후, 데레사의 생애를 살펴보았다. 그리고 각 상한의 관점에서 데레사의 삶을 조명하고 그 속에서 나타나는 사상한의 내용과 실현을 파악하여, 어떻게 인간의 삶이 전체적으로 조화를 이루고 상호작용을 하면서 초월과 통합을 이루는 가를 기술하였다. 본 논문은 심리적, 신체적, 문화적, 사회적 환경, 즉 통합심리학의 사상한의 관점 안에서 인간의 삶에 대한 이해를 구하였고, 한편으로는 그것이 영적인 삶을 추구하는 현대인에게 전하는 의미가 무엇인가에 대하여 고찰하였다.

The purpose of the present study is to review the life of St. Teresa of Avila in the context of all quadrants in integral psychology which were originally developed by Ken Wilber. Teresa of Avila lived as a nun in the 16th century and is highly esteemed as a spiritual person, an active mystic, founder of a religious order and a reformer of the Catholic Church. So far numerous studies about Teresa have been undertaken from religious, spiritual and mystic perspectives, but not many from the psychological viewpoint. This study is a modest attempt at that considering its relationship to diversity and reciprocity in all aspects of human life and human growth, especially integral life. In the first part, integral psychology is discussed along the lines of the paradigm AQAL(All quadrants, All Lines), dealing in detail with all the quadrants and discussing integral spirituality. Teresa’s faith, mysticism, philosophy of life, establishment of congregations, and her literary work are examined briefly, observing her transpersonal and integrating spiritual processes. This study attempts to show how Teresa’s spiritual mystic experiences and her active life were integrated proving the validity of all quadrants in integral psychology and the possibility for human beings to achieve a higher level of spiritual life. In the concluding part, some limitations of this work are mentioned and a suggestion for future research is proposed.
