The International Council of Museums(ICOM) defines a museum as : “ a non-profit making permanent institution in the service of society and of its development and open to the public, which acquires, conserves, researches, communicates and exhibits, for the purposes of study, education and enjoyment, material evidence of people and their environment." ]udging from this definition collecting objects and maintaining them within a specific intellectual environment is the fundamental role of the museum. This points out the reasons why museum should adopt a collections management policy, which covers from the purpose of the museum, acquisition, disposal, incoming and outgoing loans to the inventories. The policy seπes as a general reference point for the museum governing body and staff during collection activities.
