A large and growing body of empirical research demonstrates that religion and spirituality affect physical and mental health (Koenig, McCullough & Larson, 2001; Koenig, King & Carson, 2011). It alerts us to the many different ways that religion and spirituality may relate to physical and mental health. Furthermore, it suggests ways that religion and spirituality may influence the development and course of particular diseases and psychosocial problems across the life course. It suggests the importance of considering religion and spirituality as an integral part of a thorough psychosocial assessment process. Indeed, several authors have offered a variety of reasons for including religion and spirituality in the assessment process.
