It is becoming increasingly indisputable that culture and cultural differences, including language, play a discernable role in learning. In this paper, I consider how culture and language influence learning by looking at some of the cultural discontinuities. This paper suggests that at least three issues need to be emphasized as the implications for teacher and schools concerning the links among language, culture, and learning. First, students' identification with, and maintenance of, their native culture and language can have a positive influence on learning. Second, the role of the teacher as cultural accommodator and mediator is fundamental in promoting student learning. Third, a focus on cultural differences in isolation from the broader school and societal context will likely not lead to increased learning or empowerment.
