This paper aims to show that using literature as content in ESL/EFL classes has a variety of benefits. First, because literary texts depend on how the language is used to create a particular effect, literature demonstrates for learners the importance of form in achieving specific communicative goals. Second, using literature as content in the L2 classrooms provides an ideal basis for intergrating the four skills. And third, in an era when English is used in a great variety of cross-cultural encounters, literary texts are valuable in raising students’ and teachers’ cross-cultural awareness. Perhaps the greatest benefit of using literature as content in an era of increasing globalization is that literary texts provide an ideal context for examining cross-cultural differences and exploring them in a manner that particularizes rather than stereotypes these differences.
