The purpose of this study is to understand childbirth and child-care experiences of Korean mothers by choice. For this reason, on the basis of in-depth interview with a mother by choice, this researcher made the framework to examine and understand her life and empirical facts more accurately, through full empathy with her choice and self-determination. This study, in such sense, examined A's life according to classification into ‘Being Mother by Choice' and ‘Living as Mother by Choice' ’ with a decisive event, ‘childbirth and child-care', as shown in her life story, as a turning point. As a result, such analysis showed several key points as follows. First, in Korean society, it is necessary to understand and accept various faIT？ly make- up to respect determinations of mothers by choice, from a macroscopic point of view. In order to recognize and accept their determination processes and the normality of the family formed by them, first it is required to show values of social communities which recognize the diversity of difference, rather than separation as ‘ difference' Second, for mothers by choice, it is the most important issue to find how to cope with double burden such as their child-care and living expenses. Accordingly, it is so important to make econornic independence and emotional support plans for them.
