A Comparative Analysis of Learning Contents related to a Natural Disaster in Elementary School Science Textbooks of Korea and Japan

Learning contents related to a natural disaster were analyzed and compared in elementary school science textbooks of Korea and ]apan, respectively. Learning contents connected with a meteorological and a geological disaster were concentrated on the units of the 3rd and the 4th grade in Korea, on the other hand those of the 5th and 6th grade in ]apan. Exarnples of darnage by a meteorological disaster were a landslide and calamity from a flood, a drought, yellow dust, a heavy snow and a rainy spell in textbook of Korea. In the case of textbook of ]apan, those were a landslide and calamity from a flood, a typhoon, a heavy rain and yellow dust. Comrnon exarnples of damage by a meteorological disaster described in both textbook of Korea and ]apan were a landslide, calamity from a flood and yellow dust. Examples of damage by a geological disaster (an earthquake and volcanic eruption) were calamity from lava & ash, a forest fire, cracking of a road and collapse of a building in textbook of Korea and collapse of an overpass, a road, a cliff, change of the surface of the earth and a fault in ]apan, respectively. Common exarnples about darnage from a geological disaster were cracking and collapse of a road in both textbook of Korea and ]apan. Characteristically, various evacuation methods from an earthquake were described in textbook of Korea without explaining in textbook of ]apan
