조선시대 수험생들의 인성 실태

A Study on the Realities of Examinees’ Character in the Joseon Dynasty

본 연구는 조선시대의 인성교육이 모범적이었다는 오늘날의 인식에 의문을 제기하고, 실제로 인성 수준이 어떠했는가를 당시의 핵심 학습집단이었던 수험생들의 행태를 중심으로 규명하려 하였다. 연 구 결과 조선시대 수험생들이 보였던 실제 모습들은 오늘날의 기대와는 거리가 멀었다. 다양한 방법 을 동원한 부정 출석, 과거시험이 임박해야 시작하는 학습, 허위 증명서 제출을 통한 시험 연기, 평소 때의 심각한 학습 태만, 초집과 같은 예상문제집에 대한 과도한 의존, <소학>에 대한 무관심, 시험 기회를 얻기 위한 위장전입, 그리고 이러한 모습들 속에서 드러나는 수험생들의 편법적인, 심지어는 불법적인 행태들, 이 모든 것들은 당시 수험생들의 인성의 얼마만큼 왜곡이 되었는지를 여실히 보여 주는 것이었다. 인성교육을 교육의 지상목표로 삼고 모든 교육적 노력을 여기에 경주했던 조선시대가 인성교육에 커다란 문제점을 드러내 보이지 않을 수 없었다는 것이 우리의 인성교육에 주는 시사점 이 크다. 무엇보다도 과거시험 합격이 최상의 가치가 되었던 당시로서는 교육이 이러한 과거시험에 합격하기 위한 수단에 불과할 수밖에 없었던 것이고, 이로 인해 인성교육은 뒷전으로 밀려날 수밖에 없었다는 점을 교훈으로 받아들여야 한다. 따라서 인성교육의 가장 중요한 조건은 바로 시험으로부터 자유로워야 한다는 것이다.

This study questioned the perception of today about the character education in the Joseon Dynasty, and tried to identify how the level of character at that time was, centered on the behavior of examinees who were core learning groups at that time. As a result of the study, the actual images of the examinees in the Joseon Dynasty were far from the expectations of the nation. Unrighteous attendance using various illegal methods, starting to study when the civil examination is imminent, postponing the examination by submitting a false certificate, serious neglect of normal learning, excessive dependence on anticipated problem books, indifference to Sohak, implicit transfer to get exam opportunities, etc, and the expedient and even illegal behaviors of the examinees exposed in these forms, all of which clearly demonstrated how distorted the character of the examinees was at the time. The fact that Joseon Dynasty, which made character education the ultimate goal of education and all the educational efforts here, had to show great problems in character education has great implications for our character education. First of all, it should be taken as a lesson that education at the time was nothing but the best way to pass the civil examination, and that character education had to be pushed back. The most important condition of character education is that it should be free from examination.
