T he purpose o f this study was to investigate ego funcitions and psychological sym ptom s of patients with prim ary hypochondriasis and to com pare them with other som atization patients and norm al controls by using m odified form o f Beliak’s Ego Function Assessm ent and SCL-90-R. The results were as follows ; 1) Scores for all spheres o f ego functions (reality testing, sense o f reality, control o f affect and impulse, object relations, thought processes, defensive functioning, stim ulus barrier and autonom ous functioning) in hypochondriacal subjects were m uch lower than som atizing group and norm al control g ro u p (p < .0 5 ). 2) Scores for 7 sym ptom dim ensions o f SCL-90-R(obsessive com pulsivity, interpersonal sensitivity, depression, anxiety, hostility, p aranoid ideation an d psychoticism ) in h y p o ch o n d riacal subjects w ere higher than som atizing g ro u p (p〈.0 5 ). 3) For the hypochondriasis group, 5 spheres o f ego functions (reality testing, sense o f reality, object relations, th o u g h t processes an d defensive functioning) w ere negatively correlated with psychological sym ptom s o f SC L-90-R (p〈.01, pB .001)
