The authors studied ED 50 of bethanechol on the contractilities of the smooth muscles isolated from various organs of rat under the prescence of atropine (a classical competitive blocker of cholinergic muscarinic receptor), quinupramine(a newly developed antidepressant drug), imipramine and amitriptyline to investigate the peripheral anticholinergic effect o f quinupramine. There was significant difference in the ED 50 of bethanechol between control group and atropine 10 8M group(P〈0.01),quinupramine 10_7M group(P<0.01),imipramine 10 7M group(P<0.05) and amitriptyline 10 7M group(P<0.01) in the smooth muscle isolated from duodenum and there was significant difference in the ED 50 of bethanechol between quinupramine 10 7M group and atropine 10 8M group(P<0.05). There was significant difference in the ED 50 of bethanechol between control group and atropine 10 8M group, imipramine 10 7M group and amitriptyline 10 7M group(P<0.01) in the smooth muscle isolated from ascending colon and urinary bladder. But there was no significant difference in the ED 50 of bethanechol between control group and quinupramine 10 7M group in the smooth muscle isolated from ascending colon and urinary bladder
