TRH Stimulation Test in Manic and Schizophrenic Patients

After adm inistration of TRH to 13 manic and 14 schizophrenic patients and 15 normal controls, the levels of TSH, PRL and GH were measured. Althouth the mean serum TSH levies of the manic and schizophrenic patients before and after adm inistration of TRH were not significantly different from the normal controls, in TRH stimulation test, the manic patients had significantly higher rate of TSH blunted response to TRH stimulation than the schizophrenic patients and the normal controls did. The mean serum GH levels of the manic and schizophrenic patients after adminstration of TRH were significantly higher than the normal controls. The mean serum PRL levels of the manic and schizophrenic patients after administration of TRH were not significantly different from the normal controls. These results suggest that the TSH blunted response to TRH stimulation may be helpful to distinguish mania from schizophrenia.
