The authors have studied on the thyroid function between carbamazepine and lithium carbonate in 35 manic patients. The thyroid function between level at baseline and level at week 4 were compared. The results were as follows •• 1) Carbamazepine g ro u p (N ^ 20) showed significant decrease in T 4(p<0.01)，Free T4(p〈0. 0005), T:3(p〈0.05), but no significant difference in TBG, and TSH. 2) For Lithium carbonate group(N = 15)，T4(p〈0.0005) and T3(p<〔0.05) were significantly decreased and TSH (p〈0.05) was significantly increased. 3) There was no symptom and sign of thyroid dysfunction in both groups during investigation period
