The purpose of this study is to investigate the possible usefulness of thyroid hormone levels in differential diagnosis of affective, schizophrenic, schizoaffective disorders and theirs subgroups. The levels of T3 , T 4 , TSH were m easured in 30 normal controls (NC) and 127 psychiatic inpatients who were divided into 6 different diagnostic subgroups by DSM-III-R criteria * major depression (MD : n = 51),bipolar mania( BM • n = 14), bipolar depression (BD : n = 8 ) ,schizophrenia paranoid (SP * n = 3 5 ), schizophrenia non-paranoid (SN * n = 1 0 ), and schizoaffective disorder (SA •• n = 9 ). T3(p〈.05) and T4 (p<C.0 0 1 ) levels showed a significant difference between all patients(n二 127) and normal control group( 1 1 = 30). W hen affective (AD * M D +B M + BD : n = 7 3 ),schizophrenicC SCZ • S P + S N * n 二 45), schizoaffective (SA * n = 9 ) disorders and the normal control (NC : n = 3 0 ) were compared each other, it was found that T4 lev el(p < .05) can be used in differential diagnosis of NC-AD, NC-SCZ and AD-SA. It was also found that the T4 lev el(p < .05) can be used in differential diagnosis of NCMD, NC-BM, NC-BD, NC-SP,MD-SA, BM-SN, BD-SN, SP-SN and SP-SA when all 7 groups w ere compared with each other. T3 and T4 levels of patients were generally lower than those of control, particularyly T4 level of the AD group showed a significant decrease. However, all those levels fell within normal limits. Although some possible usefulness of thyroid hormone in the diagnosis of psychiatric disorders might be suggested with this study, further studies are needed to confirm it. Also, additonal studies on the neurotransm itter and other neuroendocrinological system as well as HPT axis, are needed to see the possible usefulness in diagnosis, treatm ent and prediction of the prognosis of psychiatric disorders.
