The authors studied the clinical characteristics of 67 alcoholic patients who had been admitted to the Neuropsychiatric ward of Soonchunhyang University Hospital from January 1987 to December 1989. The results are summarized as follows * 1) The admission rate of alcoholic patients increased each year. The mean percentage of annual alcoholic admission to the neuropsychiatric ward was 13.17 깠. 2) The most of patients admitted one time. 3) The most of patients admitted through OPD and against their own will. 4) The age distribution ranged from 21 to 67 years and the most common ages was 40’s. There were more males than females. 5) The most of patients graduated high school. 6) The most of patients were middle class in the socioeconomic state. 7) The most of patients resided in large city. 8) The alcoholic fathers were more common in the type 2 alcoholic patient (age of onset is before 25 years). 9) The psychosocial stressors as precipitating factor of alcohol comsumption were more common in the type 1 alcoholic patient (age of onset is after 25 years). The most common psychosocial stressor was occupational problem and second one was financial problem in both types of alcoholics. 10) The most common type of personality was anxious or fearful character (C luster C according to the DSM III-R). Dramatic, emotional or erratic(C luster B) and odd or eccentric(Cluster A) character were relatively more common in the type 2 alcoholics than in the type 1 alcoholics
