Changes o f Serum Immunoglobulins in Psychiatric Patients

Immunoglobulins, IgG, IgA, IgM, and IgE were quantified in serum from 15 schizophrenics, 13 neurotics and 20 healthy volunteers using single radial immunodiffusion and radioimmunoassay techniques. The serum immunoglobulins of patients were measured first on admission and secondly when symptoms were improved. The findings were as follows * 1) No difference of each immunoglobulin level was noticed between schizophrenics and normal controls, but IgG level of the female neurotics was significantly lower than that of the female normal controls. 2) Among the schizophrenic subjects, age of onset, sex, and dosage of antipsychotic medication had no influence on the immune function. 3) There was no significant difference of each Ig level in schizophrenics and neurotics upon clinical improvement. In conclusion, it is suggested that there is no alteration immune system of schizophrenia. Also, it is suggested that there is possibility of immune dysfunction in female neurotics.
