A dichotic listening test was administered to assess attentional impairment and evaluate possible altered cerebral laterality in 30 right-handed schizophrenic patients compared with 10 control sujects. With the purpose to delineate the assumed differential pattern in cognitive dysfunction, schizophrenics were subdivided into three groups according to dominant clinical features of ‘positive, negative, and mixed symptoms. Schizophrenics showed decreased performance trend in comparison with normal control. Between the subgroups, positive symptom schizophrenics revealed more notable changes in overall hits, laterality index, and absolute ear advantage among which left ear performance was significantly lower than the control (p〈0.05). There was no significant statistical changes in negative symptom schizophrenics comparable to that of positive schizophrenics. It suggests that ^attentional impairments associated with schizophrenic symptoms are more evident in positive group. Furthermore, it is assumed that these findings are compatible with interhemispheric or left hemispheric dysfunctions.
