Thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) response to stimulation by thyrotropin releasing hormone (TRH) was compared between 8 depressives with pain and 8 depressives without pain. The results are summarized as follows : 1) Four of the 8 depressives with pain, but none of the 8 depressives without pain showed blunted TSH response. 2) A TSH value was significantly lower in depression with pain than in depression without pain. 3) Baseline TSH level was also significantly lower in depression with pain than in depression without pain. These results support the hypothesis that depression with pain may be associated with chronic 5-HT deficit.
