In oredr to investigate whether ventricular enlargement or cerebral atrophy can be demonstrated in schizophrenics, we have undertaken a brain CT in 33 patients and 36 control subjects. The width of third and fourth ventricle, ventricular-brain ratio(VBR), the width of interhemispheric fissure, the third-sylvian fissure ratio, the sum of 4 sulci were measured. The result were as follows * 1) The ventricular-brain ratio of schizophrenics was significantly bigger than that of the control subjects(P〈0.001). In 4 patients(l2%) the VBR exeeded the control mean by 2 SD and the VBR of 12 patients(36^) exceeded the control mean by 1 SD. 2) The sum of 4 sulci of schizophrenics was significantly larger than that of the control subjects(P< 0.004). 3) Between schizophrenics and the control subjects, there were no significant differences in the width of third and fourth ventricles, the width of interhemispheric fissures and the third-sylvian fissure ratio. 4) The VBR and the sum of 4 sulci of schizophrenics were not correlated with age, duration of illness and previous EST.
