A Comparison of Clinical Symptoms and Ego Function Between Somatoform Disorder and Psychosomatic Disorder — Using SCL-90-R and Beliak’s Ego Function Scale ᅳ

The purpose of this study was to investigate the difference in clinical symptoms and ego function between somatoform disorder and psychosomatic disorder by using Symptom Check List-90-Revision (SCL.90-R) and Beliak’s Ego Function Scale (EFS). The sample consisted of 30 somatoform disorder patients, 30 psychosomatic disorder patients, and 30 normal controls. The results were as follows : 1) In SCL-90-R sacle, mean T-scores on each subscale were within normal range in all groups, but scores of the somatoform group were significantly higher than other groups. Somatoform and psychosomatic group had similar profiles and clinical symptoms, however somatoform group showed severe symptom and tended to amplify symptoms. Anxiety and interpersonal sensitivity subscale did not show significant differences, but somatization, depression, obsessive-compulsive, hostility, phobic anxiety and paranoid ideation subscale showed significant differences between somatoform and psychosomatic groups(P〈.05) 2) In EFS, mean scores of somatoform group were significantly lower than psychosomatic group in all EFS-subscales except object relations(P〈.01. Mean scores of Psychosomatic group did not show significant differences from those of normal control group and profiles of psychosomatic group were similar to those of normal control group.
