Objective Assessment of Psychopathology in Infantile Autism

  • 16

Clinical research in infantile autism requires operationally defined, reliable and valid assessment instrument. In order to develop the Korean form of the Kru^s “Autism Behavior Checklist”, eightfive children diagnosed as infantile autism(N=42), atypical developmental disorder(N= 12), developmental language disorder(N 그二 16),and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder(N=15) were assessed using “Autism Behavior Checklist” and “Social Maturity Scale”. The results are as follows * 1) The reliability was tested by means of internal consistency, tset-retest reliability and interrater reliability. Test-retest reliability(0.85) and interrater reliability(0.87) showed satisfactory results and it proved to be an internally consistent instrument(0.86). 2) The validity was tested by means of external validity, concurrent validity and discriminant validity. Its correlation with age(extemal validity) and with “Social Maturity Scale” (concurrent validity) were statistically significant(— 0.36, — 0.62,— 0.65 respectively) and it could discriminate infantile autism from other developmental disorders excellently. The authors suggest that development of assessment instrument of the preverbal language skill will help to assess the psychopathology of infantile autism more operationally and concurrent use of Schopler’s “Childhood Autism Rating Scale”, Ruttenberg’s “Behabior Rating Instrument for Autistic and Atypical Children” or Freeman’s “Behavior Observation Scale for Autism” will be able to further validate this instrument.
