Mental Health Needs Assessment of a Korean Rural Community (Kangwha County)

This study was to obtain pertinent informations for planning effective mental health services in Kangwha county. A community survey approach was used to : (1) assess the perceived importance for particular kinds of mental health problems, (2) assess characteristics of speeific subgroups in the population, (3) assess the perceived patterns of the help-seeking behavior. It was performed from July to August, 1988. A non-probability accident sample of 381 was drawn from the 680 households in two areas (Eup and one Myun). The sample size was chosen based on monetary consideration. The results were as follows; 1) Problems with children was perceived as being the most important mental health problem. Conflict within family, divorce, child abuse and neglect, alcohol addiction, neglect of the elderly, dementia or cerebrovascular accident in ranking were also perceived as being important mental health problems. Presence of emotionally disturbed or mentally retarded persons and epileptic persons in the neighborhood were perceived as the less important problems. 2) There were differences in response patterns on the importance of mental health problems in the community by sex and income. A greater percentage of males than females perceived neglect of the elderly, to be more important problem. On the question of cerebrovascular accident or dementia problem, and presence of epileptic persons in the neighborhood, lower income level respondents had a tendency to perceive these as being more important as compared to other group. 3) When assessing the perceived patterns of the help-seeking behavior, most of the respondents showed a strong tendency that they would not seek any help. 4) There were statistically significant differences in most of mental health problems on help-seeking behavior by age and educational level. Younger respondents and higher educational level respondents showed a tendency to take up a more positive attitude for solving their mental health problems. Only a few number of respondents answered that they would seek help from a psychiatrist. As the results of this study, recommendations were made for improving the quality of community mental health services which is the focus of current community mental health planners
