This study was designed to investigate the combined availability for the DST and TRH stimulation test in psychiatric patients, especially depressive patients. DST and TRH stimulation test were performed in 70 inpatients at the Dept, of Neuropsychiatry of Ewha Woman’ s University Hospital, Seoul, from June 1987 to June 1988. The results were as follows; 1) In 30 depressives(group I ) ,13 patients(43.3%) were categorized as nonsuppressors of DST and 14 patients(46.7%) were as blunted responder of TRH test. However, of 40 other psychiatric patients(group I I ) ,39 patients(97.5%) were categorized as suppressor of DST and 25 patients(62.5 %) were as normal responders of TRH test. 2) In major depression, the mean serum cortisol level of post-DST was significantly higher than group II. (P〈0.01) 3) The mean serum cortisol level of the depressives was significantly higher than the other psychiatric patients. (P〈0.01) 4) There was no stastically significant correlation between ᅀmax TSH and post-DST cortisol level. 5) As the result of discriminant analysis for the group I and group I I ,we have reached the final rule ; ᅳ0.0266(ᅀmas TSH) + 0.3119(Pᅳ DST)_0.5993〉0 belong to group V -0.0266(Am ax TSH)+0.3119(P_ Dst) - 0.5993〈0 belong to group II Following this final rule, the sensitivity of depression was 63.3%.
