Sixty anxious patients, mostly chronic, were treated under double-blind condition for 3 weeks with either ethyl loflazepate or diazepam. The frequency of side effects was similar in both treatment groups. Among them, sedation was most frequent in both drugs, but ethyl loflazepate was less intense than diazepam in severity of sedation during the first one-week treatment period. On Hamilton anxiety scale, both drugs showed significant antianxiety effect, but there were no significant differences between them except that ethyl loflazepate was more effective in genitourinary symptoms than diazepam. Ethyl loflazepate showed greater change in clinical improvement between 1-week and 3-week treatment period than diazepam, which indicates that the former drug can become more active over time than the latter. In conclusion, a small amount of ethyl loflazepate once a day is as effective as diazepam twice per day with milder sedation. Thus, it is suggested that ethyl loflazepate can be used effectively and conveniently in chronic anxious patients.
