A Study of Loevinger’ s Theory of Ego Development

  • 163

For exploring clinical applicability of Loevinger’ s theory, interrater agreement of Washington University Sentence Completion Test was measured and the relation between ego developmental level and psychopathology was evaluated. Subjects were 40 normals, 28 neurotics, and 30 schizophrenics. The three groups were duely controlled by sex, age, education, and intelligence. The results were as follows Interrater agreement across 36 items was from 40 to 86 percent with a median of 63 in the range of percentage of perfect agreement and .07 to .96 with a median of .68 in the range of correlation coefficient. Interrater agreement of total protocol rating was 60 percent in perfect agreement, 93 percent in one point agreement, and .82 in correlation coefficient. Distribution of ego developmental level shows no significant differences among the three groups. However, when the ego developmental level was divided into three levels of preconformist, conformist, and postconformist, the developmental level was highest in the normal, lowest in the schizophrenic, and median in the neurotic. These findings suggest that further vertification of Loevinger’ s theory and measurement of ego development are necessary for the clinical application.
