A Comparative Study of the Moral Development between Criminals in Jail and Reformatory

The authors attempted to evaluate the degree and nature of moral development of criminals in jail and reformatory. Subjects were 56 criminals in Jail and 42 criminals in Reformatory by the Korean court. As an instrument measuring for moral development level, Kohlberg’ s Moral Judgment Scale Form “A” was used. The results were as follows; 1) The level of moral development did not differ significantly between Jail Group and Reformatory Group. 2) Moral development of Reformatory Group are significantly related to the age of the first crime(p 〉.05). So the Reformatory Group seem to be gradually deteriorated in the level of morality by the early onset of psychotic symptoms. 3) Two Groups, did not differ in the level of moral development according to the variables of education, criminal content and the number of criminal acts. 4) It was suggested that the moral development of the Reformatory Group coule be the result of regression due to mental symptom and that of the Jail Group is due to developmental arrest at the lower level.
