The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of family background on the neurotic symptoms. The sample consisted of 179 neurotic patients and 150 normal control. The mean scores of Family Background Questionnaire were analyzed by some variables and correlated with neurotic symtoms. The results are summarized as follows • 1) Family strain was significantly higher in neurotics than in control group. 2) In neurotics family strain was higher in female than in male. 3) Family strain was higher in neurotic patients in their thirties than in any other age group. 4) Neurotic symptoms were significantly correlated with family strain, family function and family satisfaction. 5) In neruotic group family strain tended to be higher as the educational level of the subjects increased. But there were no difference in family function and degree of family satisfaction by the educational level. 6) Family function and degree of family satisfaction were higher in control group than in neurotic group.
