This study was conducted to determine familial disoders of alcoholism and its association with neurotic tendency and to try to discriminate primary alcoholism from secondary alcoholism. A field survey was conducted using Diagnostic Interview Schedule-III (DIS-III) for 1,450 Kangwha community people from August 1, 1986 to September 2,1986. Proband group comprising 1,393 were surveyed by interview using Family History-Research Diagnostic Criteria(FH-RDC). The whole proband group and their first degree relatives were used as study potulation. Loglinear model was used to analyze familial tendency of alcoholism and coexisting neuroses. The results were as follows * 1) Alcoholism showed familial tencdency in males rather than in females. The alcoholism in proband was related with high odds ratio in alcoholism of the first degree male relatives and in neurosis of the first degree feamle relatives. 2) The odds ratio of alcoholism increased up to 5.38 in the male family members of alcoholism coexisting neuroses. 3) In order to discriminate genetically determined primary alcoholism from secondary alcoholism associated with neurosis, we need further researches including development of new research instrument, since genetic factors and neurotic factors in alcoholism are interacting in complex form.
