A Study on the HLA Antigens in Schizophrenic Patients

From February of 1986 to August of 1986， we studied the frequencies of HLA antigens (DR, DQ, DRW) in 33 schizophrenic patients. The diagnosis of schizophrenia was made according to DSM-III. The schizophrenic patients consisted of 15 paranoid, 6 residual, 6 undifferentiated and 6 disorganized types. The HLA antigens of these subjects were compared with the 297 healthy Korean. The results were as follows; 1) DR3 antigen frequency was significantly increased in total schizophrenics. 2) DR5 antigen frequency was significantly increased in paranoid type schizophrenic patients. 3) DR9 antigen frequency was significantly increased in residual type schizophrenic patients. 4) DRW52 antigen frequency was significantly increased in undifferentiated type schizophrenic patients. 5) DQ2 antigen frequency was significantly increased in disorganized type schizophrenic patients. 6) There was no difference in the antigen frequency between the groups of patients with and without a hereditary factor.
