Premenstrual Syndrome in Normal Subjects and Patients with Depression and Anxiety

  • 15

The authors studied the premenstrual syndrome by using the Premenstrual Assessment Form (PAF) in 96 college students as a control group, 36 patients with depression and 43 patients with anxiety, and estimated the frequencies of 18 subtypes. The results were as followings; 1) The most frequent premenstrual symptoms were mood and behavior changes, i.e. ‘feel jittery or restless’ and ‘feel anxious’,in all groups. 2) In normal subjects, general discomfort syndrome was most frequent. Among the physical discomfort, water retention syndrome and fatigue syndrome were less frequent than other subtype symptoms. 3) In patients with depression, the frequency of hysteroid features was significantly higher than the control group, but the frequency of general discomfort syndrome was significantly lower. 4) In patients with anxiety, the frequency of organic mental features was significantly higher than the control group, but the frequency of general discomfort syndrome was significantly lower, too.
