In application of Q methodology, we attempted to identify participant’s attitude toward curative factors in short-term group psychotherapy. The subjects of this survey were 48 patients who had been admitted to a 32-bed short-term psychiatric unit of a large teaching hospital, 7 volunteer college students who had no previous psychiatric treatment experience and two of whom were dropped out in last Q-sorting during 6 months from March, 1986 to August, 1986. All participants were requested to complete Q-sorting for Yalom’s curative factors when the treatment was terminated or when dropping out was suspected. The results were statistically treated by Q factor analysis and 7 clusters could be extracted. The characteristic features of each cluster were as follows; Cluster A: Subjects of this cluster were composed mostly of schizophrenia group and 16 out of 53 participants was included in this cluster which was the highest among 7 clusters. This cluster was highly correlated to schizophrenia group and inpatient group. Therefore the function level of this cluster was expected to be low. The factors valued important by this cluster were instillation of hope, existential factor, self understanding and universality in upper ranks. And the factors valued in lower ranks were guidance, interpersonal input and altruism. Cluster B: Subjects of this cluster were composed mostly of vlunteer group. This cluster was highly correlated to Yalom’s study and volunteer group. Therefore the function level of this cluster was expected to be very higher. The factors valued important by this cluster were universality, self understading, interpersonal input and catharsis in upper ranks. And the factors valued in lower ranks were instillation of hope, identification, and guidance. Cluster C: Subjects of this cluster were composed mostly of unmarried(2) group. This cluster was highly correlated to Marcovitz’s study and volunteer group. Therefore the function level of this cluster was expected to be high. The factors valued important by this cluster were existential factor, catharsis, interpersonal output and altruism in upper ranks. And the factors valued in lower ranks were guidance, instillation of hope and identification. Cluster D: Subjects of this cluster were composed mostly of nonspecific. This cluster was highly correlated to Yalom’s study and volunteer group. Therefore the function level of this cluster was expected to be higher. The facotrs valued important by this cluster were universality, interpersonal input, existential factor and catharsis in upper ranks. And the factor valued in lower ranks were instillation of hope, identification and guidance. Cluster E: Subjects of this cluster were composed mostly of housewife group. This cluster was highly correlated to housewife group. The function level of this cluster was expected to be middle. The factors values important by this cluster were universality, interpersonal input, instillation of hope, guidance and family reenactment in upper ranks. And the factors valued in lower ranks were catharsis, group cohesiveness and interpersonal output. Cluster F: Subjects of this cluster were composed mostly of psychosis group. This cluster was highly correlated to Maxmeifs study. Therefore the function level of this cluster was expected to be middle. The factors valued important by this cluster were instillation of hope, interpersonal output, group cohesiveness and universality in upper ranks. And the factors valued in lower ranks were interpersonal input, guidance and family reenactment. Cluster G: Subjects of this cluster were composed mostly of unmarried(2) group. This cluster was highly correlated to unmarried(2) group. The fu
