Thirty-three male alcoholics with family history of alcoholism were compared with 20 male alcoholics without the history. There were no differences between the two groups in terms of occupational problems, MAST score, MMS score, alcohol-induced chronic psychiatric disorders such as alcohol amnestic disorder and dementia associated with alcoholism, nonalcoholic psychiatric disorders and physical disorders unrelated to alcohol. On the other hand, age of onset of and duration of excessive drinking, acute alcohol-induced psychiatric disorders such as alcohol withdrawal and alcohol withdrawal delirium, physical disorders related to alcohol and non-alcoholic psychiatric disorders in the family members were different between the two groups.
