Muscle Tension Levels in Anxiety Disorder Patients vs. Normal Controls Measured by EMG Biofeedback

  • 21

For the purpose of comparing muscle tension level and muscle relaxibility between anxiety disorder patients and normal controls, frontalis EMG levels of 28 anxiety disorder patients (male 14,female 14) and 40 normal controls (male 22, female 18) were measured. The results were as follows: 1) The mean value of EMG basal levels of the anxiety disorder group were 2.38 /iV for male and 2.89/iV for female, which did not prove to be significantly different from those in the control group (1.77juV for male and 3.17사V for female). 2) In both male and female groups, anxiety disorder patients and normal controls were significantly different from each other in the mean EMG level on relaxation trial and this was consistent with the findings by the analysis of covariance. The result suggested that muscle relaxibility of the anxiety disorder group was significantly lower than that of the normal control group. 3) In 36% of anxiety disorder patient, paradoxical rise of the muscle tension above the basal (resting) level was noted on relaxation trial.
