Fifty-eight DSM.III dementia patients who were consecutively admitted to a psychiatric ward in Keimyung Univ. Hospital were etiologically analyzed. Important findings of the analysis were; 1) Male to female ratio was approximately 4 to 1. 2) The important causative diseases were alcoholic dementia(24.1%), post-traumatic dementia( 22.4%), dementia of Alzheimer’s type (13.8%), and post-anoxic encephalopathy( 12.1%). 3) Post-traumatic dementia was the most frequent cause of dementia in young adulthood, and alcoholic dementia, dementia of Alzheimer’s type and post-traumatic dementia were frequent in middle adulthood, while it was difficult to document specially frequent causative diseases in the old age. 4) Among various causative diseases, all but depressive pseudodementia and post-anoxic encephalopathy were more prevalent in males
