An Analysis of Elementary Student s Eye Movement on Usage Verbal Information and Visual Information of Elementary Science Textbook

The purpose of this study was to investigate how to use the verbal informations and visual informations of elementary science textbook through eye movement according to learning style. This paper proposed that elementary students learning style(i.e. sequential and global learning style) can affect the usage of the verbal informations and visual informations of elementary science textbook. 15 elementary students that have sequential learning style and 13 elementary students that have global learning style were selected as participants. The raw learning materials on the 2007 revised science textbooks were selected as experimental tasks. After two experimental tasks were given, all information about eye fixation are recorded by eye tracker of Tobii 1750 model. Through analyzing information obtained by eye tracker, It can be acquired the ratio of usage of the verbal and visual information and the number of meaning-related integration between the verbal information and visual information in science textbook. The results were that students eye were fixated more often on the verbal information than on visual information without reference to elementary students learning style, that the ratio of integration was low without reference to elementary students learning style.
