The purpose of this study is to identify the role of reveling unitizing that a rational number is unitized by expressing as a×1 when students face multiplication and division, and to identify how they understand multiplication and division of fraction through the ‘revealing unitizing.’To figure out the role of the revealing unitizing , the researchers first defined the revealing unitizing through literature review and preliminary studies related with unitizing, multiplication, and division. The revealing unitizing was applied to the 3 sixth graders from Y elementary school located in Seoul. Data were collected from the in-depth interviews of the cases and analyzed by categorizing. There is a need to let the students recognize the meaning of unitizing clearly through ‘revealing unitizing’ to have them recognize the meaning of multiplication and division precisely in the multiplication and division situation, and to teach students the meanings of multiplication and division in a mid-process that connects problem situation with formal knowledge by applying ‘revealing unitizing.’
